Memorial space in the fetal section of the Hadera cemetery |
On April 17, 2025, a new memorial area was opened in the fetal section of Hadera cemetery – a thoughtful and meaningful initiative designed to provide dignity, space and comfort to parents who have experienced stillbirth. What was once a desolate and neglected area was transformed into a pleasant, respectful and well-maintained space. It now provides parents with a special site they can visit, honor and remember their loved ones with full hearts.
The project grew out of a deep and inspiring collaboration between Itim and the midwifery team at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, working together under the name Sparks of Hope in an Embracing Hug. This dedicated group of midwives is committed to raising awareness and offering support and compassion around one of the most painful and profound losses a family can experience – stillbirth.
Azriel Berkley-Dahl, Senior Inquiries Coordinator at Itim's Assistance Center, developed a strong personal and professional bond with the midwifery team from Hillel Yaffe. Their connection developed through shared listening, empathy and a deep commitment to change. Together they reached out to Chevra Kadisha (the Jewish burial society) in Hadera, where cemetery manager Moshe Almaliach joined forces with them to renovate and make the fetal section accessible – a contribution that is deeply meaningful for many families.
Tania Levi, Head Nurse of the Delivery Rooms at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, said, "Our team of midwives has taken on a highly meaningful mission – to shed a different light on the subject of stillbirth. Throughout this journey, they have demonstrated dedication, sensitivity and an exceptional ability to transform pain into purpose, and loss into hope. As part of the initiative, we also conduct professional training and workshops for staff, providing them with real tools to support families, both emotionally and professionally, during such heartbreaking times. The establishment of the memorial space is a tangible symbol of our commitment – a place that honors memory and fosters healing. I would like to thank all our partners on this journey, and I hope that this will inspire more cities and communities to follow suit.”
The project demonstrates how professionalism, partnership and compassion can lead to meaningful change for families in their most vulnerable moments. The new memorial corner is not just a physical place, but a space of recognition, compassion and love.
