Last week the 11th National Conference of Vascular Surgery Department Nurses was held and proclaimed a great success. Over 200 staff members from all hospitals and clinics in Israel participated and presented a variety of topics, some innovative and unique in the field of research and treatment.
The conference, which was organized by Rabab Wated, Head Nurse in Surgery A Department and Vascular Surgery at Hillel Yaffe, and her deputy Nihad Abu Hussein, was opened with greetings by Dr. Mickey Dudkiewicz, Director of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, and Deputy Director of Nursing Ms. Alona Kroll. Both of them noted that a nursing conference is not a trivial matter and that the hospital was proud to host it.

Later, Dr. Ofer Galili, Director of the Vascular Surgery Unit at Hillel Yaffe, spoke on innovations in invasive procedures for the treatment of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), noting the nursing context of hospitalization of a DVT patient in an internal medicine department as opposed to in a surgical department.
Other lectures addressed a diverse array of issues and were given by medical and nursing staff from hospitals around the entire country. Among the lectures that generated a great deal of interest was the lecture given by Dr. Tal Solomon of Emek Medical Center in Afula, who spoke about his impressions after treating earthquake victims in Nepal last year. Another interesting lecture was given by the Vascular Surgery Staff of Hillel Yaffe. They spoke about the rejected patient and a situation in which the patients do not cooperate with the staff, making recovery difficult.
At the end of the conference, there was a performance by the Playback Theater, which dealt with shift handovers between the nursing staff, an issue that was in line with the panel discussion that capped off the conference and the likes of which had never been seen at similar conferences.
"Shift handovers are an everyday occurrence and would seem to be obvious," said Ms. Rabab Wated, "But it is a weak spot where issues can arise and have an effect, at times even a decisive effect, on the nature of treatment. That is why we decided to raise the issue at this year's conference and to discuss it. Panel participants were selected from medical and nursing staff involved in vascular surgery, but also from the experts in our Risk Management Unit and Social Services." The panel discussion, as well as the play, and obviously the lectures, generated a great deal of interest and the hall was packed. The organizers from Hillel Yaffe earned high praise for their work, both in terms of the content and the logistics.

"Many came up to us at the end of the day and thanked us for our hard work," said Ms. Rabab Wated and Mr. Nihad Abu Hussein. "Some of them even said that they would be willing to hold the conference here at Hillel Yaffe again. From our perspective, that something we can be very proud of - both personally and professionally."
