New at Hillel Yaffe: Diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders that relate to the brain and nervous system

Neuro-ophthalmology focuses on diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients who suffer from visual disorders originating in the brain and nervous system - in other words, vision problems that are not due to the eyeball itself, but to disorders of the optic nerve, visual pathways and brain. It is a field that requires knowledge of issues related to the eye, brain, nerves and muscles, with a comprehensive view of vision disorders stemming from other general diseases. In simpler terms, it is a field that connects opthalmology and neurology.

Many neurological diseases have symptoms and signs in the eyes, such as damage to the optic nerve, problems in the fields of vision, eye movement disorders, double vision, involuntary eye movement (nystagmus), changes in the pupils and the fundus, and more. These signs are frequently an initial expression of a neurological disease, and a routine eye exam cannot diagnose it.

The new clinic performs detailed testing of the visual pathways and eye movements in order to reach an exact diagnosis. As part of the new service, Dr. Kesler works with the Opthalmology and Neurology Departments, by consulting in the clinics, and providing consultations to the departments in the medical center that require her field of expertise.

Prof. Anat Kesler is Clinical Professor at Tel Aviv University, a graduate of Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Medicine, a specialist in neurology, who further specialized in neuro-ophthalmology in Israel and the US. Between 2001 and June 2016, she managed the Neuro-Ophthalmology Unit and the idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Center at Tel Aviv Medical Center.
