“Rheumatic diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and colitis) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications, including atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure,” said Dr. Ofer Kobo - a senior physician in the Cardiology Division and head of the new service for patients with rheumatic issues, which in Israel is currently only offered at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center.

“Moreover, patients with both rheumatic and heart disease have a worse prognosis. Over the years, various studies conducted in the Cardiology Division and around the world have shown that despite the increased risk, patients with chronic inflammatory diseases and their cardiovascular risk factors are underdiagnosed and undertreated.”

At the new clinic, the focus for patients with rheumatic diseases that are defined as a population at higher risk of suffering from cardiovascular problems is preventive treatment that takes their disease into account. The Cardio-Rheumatology Clinic strives to provide comprehensive care that responds to the diverse needs of patients, with an interdisciplinary approach that facilitates early detection and even prevention of cardiovascular diseases in patients with rheumatic disorders. The clinic will also follow-up on the patients with rheumatic disorders who have a history of myocardial infarction and require support and close follow-up.

As noted above, this clinic is the first of its kind in Israel that brings together both cardiovascular and rheumatology information and knowledge. The clinic will be operated in partnership and consultation with the experts in Hillel Yaffe’s Rheumatology Unit.

HYMC Cardiology Division Director, Prof. Ariel Roguin, said, “Cardio-rheumatology is a pioneering field and currently only exists at a small number of cardio-rheumatology clinics at several leading institutions worldwide, including Stanford, NY, Cleveland Clinic and University of Toronto. The opening of this clinic at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center is an opportunity to offer a special response to the population of patients in the area.

To make an appointment at the clinic, you will need a referral from your medical insurer (Form 17) or payment of NIS 100 per visit.
