The department treats patients with multisystem organ failure who are hospitalized through the Department of Emergency Medicine or who are transferred to the department from other hospital departments, when necessary. The patients in the department have trauma injuries, serious internal diseases, have undergone major surgery or are children requiring respiratory support.
Each year approximately 700 patients are hospitalized in the department. 40% of them are hospitalized due to internal diseases and 60% following major surgery or trauma injuries.
The unit has 13 treatment units. The patients in the unit are fully monitored, including invasive and noninvasive monitoring systems (blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate and blood oxygen saturation), advanced hemodynamic monitoring devices, advanced respiratory support system, intravenous infusion systems, advanced systems for treatment of kidney failure, plasma replacement therapy, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems, sonar monitoring and diagnosis and more.
The department holds staff meetings and visits, lectures and literature reviews, regular meetings with consultants from other departments (infectious diseases, imaging, internal medicine and surgery).
The department is affiliated with the Technion and is regularly engaged in research, teaching of students and guidance of interns.
During hospitalization in the department, if necessary, patients can meet with the department’s multidisciplinary staff. |
