New at Hillel Yaffe: Ultrasound diagnosis of pelvic floor disorders

Hillel Yaffe Medical Center’s Gastroenterology Institute has recently begun using a special ultrasound device that enables assessment and dynamic diagnosis of structural and functional pelvic floor disorders through the use of high-frequency sound waves.

The scan is performed by placing an external probe on the pelvic floor area, without penetration of organs. In some cases, and depending on the nature of the problem, the assessment will need to be completed with a rectal ultrasound, in which the device in inserted into the anus to assess sphincters, fistulas or abscesses and/or a vaginal probe in women.

Dr. Amani Bishara, a senior physician at the Gastroenterology Institute, who performs the exam said, “Pelvic floor disorders may have different sources, including the urinary tract, gynecological system, digestive tract and the musculoskeletal system. The new scan is performed on patients who have functional pelvic floor disorders stemming from the digestive tract, for example, chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, anal pain, purulent discharge and pelvic organ prolapse. The scan is not painful, and patients do not need to fast, have anesthesia or stop any regular treatment, and only need a cleansing enema about two hours before the exam.”

The service is provided at the Gastroenterology Institute in conjunction with the Pelvic Floor Clinic and the Proctology Unit. Patients should bring a referral from their family physician/gastroenterologist/proctologist/gynecologist as well as a financial commitment from their insurer (HMO).
