Hillel Yaffe's Cardiology Division is stepping out into the community: “Listening to your heart”

5/09/2022

World Heart Day is celebrated worldwide on September 29. This year, doctors from HYMC’s Cardiology Division decided to go out into the community, volunteering to provide a series of lectures designed to increase awareness of heart disease, particularly among women.

Despite the concerning data that show that one in every two women suffers from heart disease, many women are not aware of the symptoms and at times do not associate them with heart disease. It is not only women who lack awareness of the full array of heart attack symptoms in women, but also medical staff at community clinics and emergency rooms, which makes it difficult to provide proper care in real time.

In September, senior physicians from Hille Yaffe’s Cardiology Division will be lecturing to residents of the cities, councils and towns in the vicinity of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in order to heighten awareness of heart disease among both men and women alike. In the lectures, the doctors will discuss the main symptoms of heart attacks, what the differences are between men and women and whether they can be prevented.

The Cardiology Division Director at Hillel Yaffe, Prof. Ariel Roguin, who developed this welcome program, said, “We decided to go directly into the community to raise awareness of the typical effects and symptoms of heart disease. It is important that the general public be aware of the various symptoms and know that heart disease does not only affect men. Until the age of about 70, coronary heart disease is more common among men than among women, particularly in light of women's natural hormonal activity. However, as soon as the disease in women appears, the mortality rates are higher and the early complications following myocardial infarction are more frequent than in men. I call on each and every one of you to come to a lecture. Remember, knowledge saves lives.”
