A hero in white: despite being wounded, nurse Michal Alon continued to treat wounded until she herself was evacuated to Hillel Yaffe

Michal Alon, a trained nurse, was evacuated to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center after being shot by a terrorist in Zikim. Despite being wounded, she along with her husband and children continued treating the wounded who were brought to the kibbutz. She is currently hospitalized in Surgery B and her injuries are defined as moderate-minor

With her twin sister, Yael, sitting beside her, Michal Alon recounts in a weak, yet steady, voice her own personal miracle among the horrific news coming out in a constant stream from the south. “We went for the weekend, my husband, our children and I, to celebrate the holiday of Simchat Torah in Zikim with the soldiers. We awoke to air-raid sirens and mortars. At some point, wounded started to arrive. As a nurse, I began treating one of them. I went with her to a room near the mobile shelter, because sirens for missile strikes started wailing and then we began hearing shooting as well. I thought that soldiers were coming to evacuate us. When the door opened, a soldier dressed in an IDF uniform entered, but he turned out to be a terrorist. He fired several shots at me and then continued on his way. I tried to dress my own wound, while more and more wounded continued to come in. Despite my hand injury, I managed to instruct my children on how to bandage the wounds of the other injured people. Thank God we were able to get out of there alive.”

She also said that a day after she came to Hillel Yaffe, while she and her husband were wondering and anxious about the fate of the soldiers they treated, she discovered that one of them was in the next department. Her husband even went to visit him with one of their daughters. “We felt somewhat better,” she said, while still recovering from her own injuries.
