Hillel Yaffe Medical Center's Gastroenterology Institute recently introduced a unique approach, known as Ayurveda, to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal diseases.
“It is an ancient form of medicine that helps treat and heal various diseases as well as functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or in stable patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease that are not active such as Crohn’s disease or colitis, who require support with other aspects of their basic disease. The main treatment is done with proper use of ‘natural substances’ - personalized diet and medicinal herbs in conjunction with recommendations for a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr. Eran Magon, MD, a pioneer in the use of Ayurvedic medicine in Israel and a consultant on Ayurveda for the treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center.
“The treatment integrates the body, mind and spirit. Beyond questioning and physical diagnosis, we also diagnose the mind-body type by checking the pulse at the wrist, which provides us with a great deal of information about the condition of the patient's internal organs, level of toxins, powers of healing, stress and fatigue.”
“It's no secret that a proper diet and healthy lifestyle contribute to good health and quality of life, to healing of various diseases and particularly gastrointestinal and liver diseases. We provide our patients with ‘integrative treatment,’ that views a person as a whole and includes conventional medical treat alongside alternative medicine such as reflexology, acupuncture and Ayurveda, so that the patient receives comprehensive care and treatment that has been tailored to their condition,” said HYMC’s Gastroenterology Institute Director Yael Kopelman. “Patients benefit from a wide range of services, including a dietitian, medical psychologist, social worker and alternative medicine in order to provide optimal treatment of their disease and relieve their symptoms.”

What is special about Ayurveda compared to other types of medicine?
The approach: Ayurveda relates to body, mind, spirit and senses. It is defined as a method that reveals what is harmful and beneficial for a person in all areas of life - diet, physical activity, herbal medicine, attention to the needs of the body and mind as well as lifestyle.
Body-mind type diagnosis: Ayurvedic medicine is tailored not only to the problem or disease, but also to the “core nature” of the patient by birth. Along with the comprehensive investigation of the patient's complaints and symptoms, Ayurveda takes the special components that are attributed to the type and the type’s specific imbalance and enables indication for treatment to restore the patient's balance and health.
Various treatment methods: Ayurvedic medicine offers a wide range of treatment methods that include, diet, herbal medicine, methods of stress alleviation such as meditation and breathing exercises, balancing the gastrointestinal tract and the removal of toxins as well as guidelines for a healthy life style.
“Ayurveda views the function of the gastrointestinal tract as being very important due to its power and ability to break down and easily absorb the components of the meal and major food groups. Most diseases are caused by a gradual and ongoing buildup of toxins due to food that is not suitable or a digestive tract that is unable to penetrate the desired substances in the food into the body, which leads to fermentation, heaviness and an increased quantity of waste. According to Ayurveda, these substances, sometimes referred to as ‘toxins’ build up in our tissue and weaken it. In most cases, they are the main reason for chronic problems and diseases such as problems with phlegm and asthma, skin issues and psoriasis, joint problems, various allergies, fatigue, gastrointestinal diseases, migraines and more,” said Dr. Magon.
