My path to medicine

“Towards the end of high school, I was indecisive about my field of interest. My first choice was Law, but it seems the market was flooded, so I redefined my expectations from the profession I was about to choose, to include science, logic, and the ability to help and assist others. It was not long before I realized medicine had it all. Since then, I fall in love with this profession anew and thank God for the privilege day in and day out. Medicine is a way of life, a path I’m glad I chose, which allows me to engage in the development of medical innovations as a bridge and leverage for promoting health and handling new medical challenges while seizing the many opportunities that come my way to improve and upgrade treatment and research capabilities.”

Dr. Sharon Rashi Elkeles, Head of the Research & Innovation Center

Holds a Ph.D. in Biology, specializing in Applicational Genomics, from Tel Aviv University. Has over 10 years of business experience as a founder and CEO of startup companies in the fields of biotech and biohealth. In her role at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, Dr. Sharon Rashi Elkeles is accountable for maximizing the resources and efforts in the field of innovation, to enable the development of new treatments, the embedding of new technologies, and leading processes for improving the quality of medicine provided by the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center.

My path to medicine

“I always took an interest in science and technology. In the army, I chose to become a science and math soldier-teacher for underprivileged soldiers. Following my military service, I entered the academic world and spent over 2 decades of my adult life at Tel Aviv University, where I developed my desire to be part of the innovation world for the benefit of human health. Later on, I was a partner and founder of many projects dealing with integration and positioning medicine and powerful women.”

Julia Kupperberg, Head of the Medical-Scientific Library and an Associate at the Research & Innovation Center

Holds an M.A. in Information Studies from Bar Ilan University and has headed the Medical Sciences Library for the past 10 years. She accompanies the researchers in their work, starting with the location of articles, verifying their credibility, and selecting appropriate locations for research publications while using state-of-the-art tools, such as AI. She recently joined the Research & Innovation Center as a Research Grants Referent.

My path to medicine

“Medicine is the most important realm in which I was able to realize my skills and endless desire to influence, initiate, and lead, together with a group of unparalleled female professionals. I immigrated to Israel from the Soviet Union at the age of 17, and as a granddaughter of a doctor who dedicated her life to saving people, I grew up knowing medicine holds a central role in life.”

Dr. Inbar Gur, a Graduate of the Hila Program and a Resident at the Ophthalmology Department

Graduate of the Technion Faculty of Medicine in MD/PhD, with a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology on the recruitment of in-vivo neural networks. A social entrepreneur, one of the founders of WoMEd – a unique mentorship program for female physicians in Israel. Over the past year, as part of Hillel Yaffe's Hila program for Medical Leadership and Excellence, she established an innovative service for the treatment of glaucoma (an eye disease that impairs vision.) The clinic allows patients before and after glaucoma surgery to self-monitor intraocular pressure from any place they choose, at high frequency and accessibility. The data is transmitted to the medical staff, who can identify complications at an early stage and provide adequate medical intervention. This project won a competitive grant of hundreds of thousands of shekels from the Digital Health Department at the Ministry of Health.

My path to medicine

“It was clear to me that I would study medicine. I studied at the Technion as a deferred-service student, served as a physician, a Military Clinic Commander, and Head of the Medicine Department. In preparation for becoming a resident, I looked for a place where I could have the most dramatic influence over patients' quality of life. The ability to diagnose and treat eye diseases allows patients to enjoy many years of good vision, independence, and especially enjoy their life and family. As far as I’m concerned, the fact that this is a technological profession, with a tendency to innovate and constantly develop, is a great bonus.”

Dr. Moran Rotman, Graduate of the Hila Program and Resident at the Obstetric and Fertility Women's Department

Graduate of the Ben Gurion Faculty of Medicine, acts for equal medicine, bridging the health gaps in the periphery and strengthening ties with the community.

My path to medicine

“I’m the youngest of 8 sisters. I grew up in a moshav and played basketball until I joined the army. I enlisted as an assistant flight controller and later on, became an instructor. Following one semester, I took an officers’ course and served as an Operations Officer at the flight school and Hanetzach squadron. Following my military service, I was looking for a meaningful profession that could provide me with the ability to make an impact. In medicine school I became fond of the obstetric world, I love bringing new life into this world.”

Dr. Noa Hagag, Graduate of the Hila Program and Resident at the Obstetric and Fertility Women's Department

Holds a B.A. in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from the Bar Ilan University and an M.A. in Immunology from the Hebrew University. Graduated from the Bar Ilan Faculty of Medicine. Leads numerous clinical and basic science research aspiring to contribute to the quality of medicine and research at the Medical Center.

My path to medicine

“The desire to practice medicine emanated from being a researcher and the integration of lab work and clinical practice, with an emphasis on women’s health. Sounds a bit corny, but I've always liked the idea of women taking care of women.”

As part of their participation in the Hila program, both Dr. Rotman and Dr. Hagag, together with Prof. Ilan Bruchim, initiated the establishment of a clinic for remote abortion using medicine. This clinic can help thousands of Israeli women to undergo a physically and emotionally complex process wherever they choose, reducing the need to arrive at the medical center to perform the process and follow-up. This project is another winner of the competitive call for proposals by the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Health.
