Serum for treatment of severe dry eye

The Ophthalmology Department at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center has opened a new Dry Eye Service for patients suffering from severe dry eye. Working together with the hospital’s Laboratory Division and the Blood Bank, under the direction of Rawan Abu Halal and Dr. Maanit Shapira, the special serum is produced from the patient's own blood and is administered as eye drops.

Dr. Ramez Barbara, a cornea specialist in the Ophthalmology Department at Hillel Yaffe, said, “Extreme dryness in the eyes has a negative impact on quality of life and daily living. We offer innovative treatment that is suitable for patients with severely dry eyes after they have tried the standard treatments such as lubricant eye drops and anti-inflammatory medications, without improvement. The process is very simple and similar to taking blood. We perform the process at very high standards and in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health to ensure the sterility of the serum produced. The patient puts the serum drops into their eyes, as instructed by their ophthalmologist.”
