Breast masses are not always cancerous, which is why it is important to have all the necessary tests done to definitively determine the type of tumor and the reason for its development, and then decide on the appropriate treatment methods. Tissue samples (biopsies) from the breast are generally performed under the guidance of some form of imaging. The purpose of the test is to assess the nature of the suspicious mass and determine whether it is malignant or benign.

The Breast Imaging Institute at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center performs breast biopsy under MRI guidance. This is the most advanced test, designed for women who have had a breast MRI that revealed a suspicious finding that requires a sample to be taken for in-depth diagnosis. The test is performed under local anesthesia, generally without side effects other than pain, a small bruise and slight discomfort for some patients. The procedure takes 30-40 minutes with a radiologist, nurse and radiographer, who explains the process at each and every stage.

When is the test done?

  1. An MRI-guided biopsy is required when the finding can only be seen on an MRI and is not visible using mammography or ultrasound.
  2. Determining the stage of the disease prior to surgery in patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer is intended to determine whether it is a single-focus or multifocal disease.
  3. Investigation of tumor remnants in women who underwent surgery to remove a tumor from their breast and for whom pathology found positive margins or close to the margins of the surgery.
  4. Searching for the initial source of the tumor - 1%-2% of breast tumors are expressed with metastases to the lymph nodes in the armpit or bones, without evidence of the disease in the breast in a manual examination or mammography. A breast MRI will detect up to approximately 85% of these tumors.
  5. Screening exams for women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer, carriers of the BRCA1/2 gene.
