Roey's personal story is one of the best known in Israel. In 1993, his brother, Shuki Baso, murdered their father, after he had been extremely violent on a daily basis to their mother and family.
To mark Domestic Violence Awareness Day, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center invited Roey to share his story and how he coped. “The real tragedy isn’t the murder itself. The real tragedy is all the violence in the home over the years,” said Roey in his lecture, during which he also shared how embarrassed he and his brother felt and how they needed to hide things for so many years.

“At Hillel Yaffe, we strive to be attentive and sensitive to domestic - and any other form - of violence,” said Director General of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, Prof. Mickey Dudkiewicz. This was also echoed by Head Nurse Dina Fainblat and Maram Kaawar, a social worker in the Department of Pediatrics and Chairperson of the Hospital Violence Intervention Committee.
All of the speakers called on the audience to contact the relevant people at the hospital or in the community if they encounter domestic violence.
