Hillel Yaffe Medical Center’s Department of Orthopedics continues to innovate: Recently, innovative orthopedic surgery using cutting-edge technology was performed to lengthen the femur of a 15-year-old boy who suffered from severe limping after a femur fracture. The surgery was planned using advanced computer technology that enables simulation of the course of surgery. During the surgery, a special nail containing a magnetic motor was implanted in the boy's femur, designed to lengthen and straighten the leg, eliminating his limp. The surgery was successful, the boy was transferred to the Department of Orthopedics for recovery and was discharged home two days later.

Dr. Eyal Mercado, the pediatric orthopedist at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center who performed the surgery, said, "This is an innovative method for limb lengthening. In the past, we had to use an external fixator on the leg, but today, thanks to this advanced technology, the magnetic nail is implanted inside the body and is not visible. It effectively enables us to lengthen the femur and make it the same length as the other leg at a rate of 1 mm per day. Combined with personalized physical therapy to maintain leg mobility and strengthen muscles, patients can return to full activity after three months."
