The Innovative and Safe Method for Treating Uterine Fibroids

For the first time at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center: innovative treatment of fibroids using radio waves. Advantage - less pain and bleeding through the minimally invasive and safe procedure

This is an innovative procedure suitable for women suffering from pain and bleeding due to uterine fibroids. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Department at Hillel Yaffe. It is done under ultrasound or hysteroscopy guidance, through a minimally invasive procedure that employs technology involving insertion of a very small electrode through the vagina and radio wave treatment to significantly shrink the fibroid. This method can also be performed laparoscopically - depending on the fibroid’s location in the uterus.

"Uterine fibroids are common in women, with up to 70% of women of all ages suffering from their effects, including severe pain, bleeding, fertility problems and more in some women," said Dr. Nili Raz, a senior physician in HYMC’s Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Department, who performed the surgery for the first time at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center. "The procedure was performed on a woman who suffered from bleeding and pain for a long time, and after she came to our Fibroid Clinic, it was decided that she was a suitable candidate for the procedure."

The advantages of treating fibroids with this method, which has been used in Europe for several years and recently came into use in Israel as well, are that it is minimally invasive and enables us to provide treatment for certain types of fibroids safely and without the need for hysterectomy or complex abdominal surgeries. Additionally, since the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, the woman can go home the same day. Studies have shown the method to be highly effective and reduce bleeding and pain.

The first surgery, which was as noted above, was successfully performed by Dr. Raz, involved the participation of Dr. Livna Shafat-Heller, Gynecological Ultrasound Service Director, Dr. Renat Raines Karmel, head of the Gynecology Emergency Department, Dr. Yehuda Pauzner, senior physician in the Gynecology Department, and Dr. Yuval Atzmon, senior physician in the IVF and Fertility Unit.

Dr. Raz concludes, "When a woman comes to the Fibroid Clinic, we consider each woman's personal data, needs and desires, and perform a thorough examination of the fibroid. Only then do we consider what the optimal personalized treatment for her is."

Professor Ilan Bruchim, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Department Director at Hillel Yaffe, also stated, "This innovative procedure is another important element in our ability to provide safe and effective treatment for women who have this common condition. We strive to bring the most advanced technologies to our patients."
