Dr. Shulman. The addition of Dr. Shulman allows for the significant expansion of the hospital’s oncology services |
Last month an Oncology unit was opened at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, headed by Dr. Katerina Shulman, a clinical oncology specialist, who has served up until now as a senior doctor on the oncology team of the Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Dr. Shulman’s addition to the “Hillel Yaffe” staff will allow significant expansion of the oncology services provided to the hospital’s patients.
“Up until now various services have been offered to oncology patients at Hillel Yaffe in various departments: Hematology, Surgery, Internal Medicine and others, and oncology consultations were conducted with by an external doctor,” explains Dr. Shulman. “Starting from this month, not only will the care plan of the patient in need of such care include close oncology consultations in the hospital, but we will also be able to provide clinic services in the oncology field and expanded outpatient hospitalization services.”
It is important to note that oncology activity is mostly based on providing extensive ambulatory care, which includes providing complementary treatments to cancer patients, keeping track of the illness and establishing a treatment plan. The unit has 6 beds for comfortable treatment administration, and/or, for special care, if necessary. Among the future Dr. Shulman’s future plans as a part of her management of the unit: continuing the expansion of services, recruitment of additional human capital in the field, creation of clinical and research cooperation with various hospital departments, creating a multidisciplinary forum related to the field of oncology in the hospital and creation of a multidisciplinary clinic for issues directly relevant to oncology. Dr. Shulman also teaches at the Technion Faculty of Medicine in Haifa, and continues to be a collaborator in research in her field with other associate hospitals in Israel.
Professor Meir Oren, the director of the Hillel Yaffe Medical center, offers his congratulations on the opening of the unit and the addition of Dr. Shulman to the “Hillel Yaffe” specialists’ team, stating that: “The opening and operation of an Oncology unit is a most significant and important milestone in continuing the development of the medical services that the hospital provides to the local population. It is clear to me that with the addition of Dr. Shulman, this field will gain momentum, which will significantly aid the oncology patients in our area.”
