New: Clinic, Treatment and Eye Surgery for Children

Last month, the Ophthalmology Department at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center welcomed a senior physician, Dr. Yuval Cohen, whose expertise made it possible to expand the services offered by the department, this time in the field of pediatrics.

Dr. Yuval Cohen is a graduate of Ben-Gurion University's medical school and specialized in ophthalmology at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. After his residency, he worked for a year at Sheba Medical Center and then performed a fellowship at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cohen also earned a Ph.D. from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Tel Aviv University, where he conducted pioneering research on the development of myopia.

The Pediatric Ophthalmology diagnoses and treats common eye disorders such as retinopathy of prematurity which can lead to serious vision problems and even blindness, surgeries for strabismus in children and adults, pediatric cataract surgery,  treatment and surgery for blocked tear ducts, treatment for lazy eye, fitting children for glasses, examinations for orthoptic disorders and more.

The clinic staff also includes an orthoptist, who works closely with Dr. Cohen and specializes in testing eye movement, eye focus and strabismus, and in determining the prescription for glasses children require. 

"Diagnosing and treating eye diseases at an early age is extremely important," said Dr. Cohen. "Identifying and treating diseases in infancy and early childhood can make the difference in the ability to recover from an eye disease or an irreversible vision impairment, and accordingly have a strong impact on the child's quality of life and ability to lead a normal life. 

Dr. Beatrice Tiosano, director of Hillel Yaffe's Ophthalmology Department said, "Dr. Cohen's addition to our staff and the expansion of the ophthalmology services our department provides is very important to us. Furthermore, it's important that the public know that Hillel Yaffe today is the only place between Netanya and Haifa that performs pediatric eye surgery."
