On Sunday, September 6, 2015, the Orly and Guy morning show on Channel 10 held a contest between three chefs from three hospitals in Israel: Soroka Hospital, Ichilov Hospital and Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera. They were instructed to prepare two authentic dishes from the hospital's menu. Chef Gershon Kigel of Hillel Yaffe prepared the Friday night dish of roasted terriyaki chicken with sesame seeds, served with steamed bulgur wheat and roasted vegetables, antipasti. As his lunch dish, the Hillel Yaffe chef cooked up stuffed turkey breast, served with mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, along with sautéed green and yellow beans. The contestant from Ichilov prepared a dish with tofu and soy sauce, and the contestant from Soroka also made roast chicken and salmon with sautéed vegetables.
The judges, Orly, Guy and Chef Nir Zuk, unanimously selected the dishes prepared by Hillel Yaffe's chef as the tastiest and those that were served most aesthetically.
Chef Gershon Kigel has worked at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center since 1996, and this past July was named Kitchen Director. Fifty-five employees and staff members work in the Hillel Yaffe kitchen, which serves 1,500 meals a day.
