Although retired, Prof. Meir Oren, former director of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, continues to be recognized for his outstanding work. As part of the celebrations for the National Day of China, Prof. Oren received the Chinese National Friendship Award and a letter of appreciation from the Chinese government for his important contribution to promote China's emergency preparedness as well as contributions to other medical fields. This is the highest award for foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social progress. The award was conferred upon Prof. Oren by the Vice Premier and a special reception was hosted by the Chinese Premier the day after the ceremony.
The National Friendship Award has been awarded annually since 1991 to 50 content experts from around the world for their contributions to China's economic and social progress. To date, the award has been given to 1,449 foreign experts. Over 60,000 foreign experts work in China each year. The award is given by the Chinese Premier or Vice Premier at an event held in the government building in Tiananmen Square.
Recipients of the 2015 award and certificate of appreciation represent an array of professions and areas of expertise, including economics, trade, behavioral science, electronics, science and technology, and come from 21 countries: the USA, UK, Germany, France, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Tanzania, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, India and Israel, which was represented by Prof. Meir Oren alone.
"The events were very impressive. Attention was paid to every detail, and they were quite moving," said Prof. Oren, who was previously recognized by the Chinese government with the Xinjiang Province's Friendship Award in September 2014.
