The field trip that Sahar Magdalawi from Baqa al-Gharbiyye took ended in the most unpleasant place possible - Hillel Yaffe Medical Center's operating room. "We were on the bus on the way back from a field trip to Tiberias, very close to home already, and I was talking to a friend about fixing my hijab," said Sahar. "I put the pin in my mouth, like I've done many times, and I swallowed it by accident." It was reported right away to the principal, who called Sahar's father. He rushed her to the Emergency Room at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, and after several exams and an X-ray, they saw that the pin had settled at the base of the lungs, an especially bad position, because it could puncture the lung and cause serious respiratory problems.
Dr, Galit Avior, a senior physician at Hillel Yaffe's ENT Unit, who removed the pin from the lung, explained that the procedure was performed under anesthesia, in the operating room. The pin was removed very, very gently due to its unusual position deep in the lung with the help of a special device (rigid bronchoscopy).
The following day, Sahar was already sitting in the department, together with her father and friend, smiling and calm, waiting for her letter of discharge. Both of them know that aside from the quick, efficient and professional treatment she received, she was also very lucky. They are grateful for their good fortune and for the staff.
Dr. Galit Avior said that this is not the first time the unit has treated someone for swallowing a pin when they were fixing a kerchief. She would like to issue another warning - do not fix kerchiefs when holding a pin in your mouth or between your teeth. While it may be quick and easy, and is something you do frequently, it only takes once and it may be critical."
