The place to make babies

The incoming Director of Hillel Yaffe's IVF Unit, Clinical Asst. Prof. Einat Paz-Shalom, promises to continue the uncompromising, unique, personal and professional approach that has characterized the unit to date

The IVF Unit of the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Department at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center already has an outstanding reputation, with some of Israel's highest percentages of pregnancies and deliveries. Additionally, the unit is proud of its strong abilities and advanced technologies such as IVM (in vitro maturation), egg donation according to the Egg Donation Law, embryo development in an EmbryoScope, and use of protocols with minimum exposure to hormones. All of these have positioned the unit as one of the leading in Israel, when it comes to "making babies."

In recent months there have been some staff changes in management of the unit. Assistant Clinical Prof. Paz-Shalom, a specialist in gynecology and fertility, stepped into this senior position. She studied medicine at the Technion in Haifa, did her residency at Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, and then served as a senior physician at Hillel Yaffe's IVF Unit. In 2008, Clinical Asst. Prof. Paz-Shalom held a fellowship at Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal, Canada, and worked as a senior physician for five years at the IVF Unit there. In 2013, she returned to Israel, to Hillel Yaffe's IVF Unit, where as previously mentioned, she recently took the helm from Clinical Asst. Prof. Adrian Ellenbogen, the unit's legendary director.

"Clinical Asst. Prof. Ellenbogen built the unit from scratch," said Clinical Asst. Prof. Paz. "He brought the knowledge, rich gynecological experience, the desire to advance and lead professionally, along with sensitivity and empathy towards every single woman treated in the unit. In this regard, the staff and I are continuing the personal, embracing approach, and are of course, trying to make things even better," she emphasized. "Our main message: each woman receives personalized treatment. In other words, the treatment approach is customized for every woman - in physical and psychological terms. For me, as a doctor, all women are clearly different and, therefore all fertility treatments are different too. Our entire staff acts like a single cohesive unit - dedicated fully to the woman and her desire for a child - because that's what we're all about. We pay attention to major issues as well as the finest of details - professionally and personally. It's important for us 'to feel' the woman, to be there for her, personally, throughout the process. When we need to, we hug them. Simply hug them. While it may sound absurd, we all know how much of an influence the emotional aspect has on treatment, and we don't ignore it. It's important for us that the patient feels "at home" here. The very fact that she comes to us means that she's been on a difficult and complex path in all respects."

The Hillel Yaffe IVF Unit works with all of Israel's HMOs. Additional services that are important for all women undergoing fertility treatment at the department are professional work with a medical psychologist, and full and close cooperation with the hospital's Alternative Medicine Clinic.

The unit is recognized as an academic unit and recognized for residency by the Scientific Council. As such, it serves as a unit for mandatory in-service training for residents at Hillel Yaffe's Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. It also hosts students from the faculty at the Technion in Haifa, as part of required training and studies.
