Dr. Beatrice Tiosano, Director of the Opthalmology Department at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, specializes in glaucoma and cataract surgery and performs numerous combined surgeries in this field. She is among the first in Israel to perform innovative surgery that uses a XEN implant to treat interocular pressure, which is the result of glaucoma.
"This is an innovative, safe and effective method to treat what is known as open-angle glaucoma - the most common surgery today for this issue," said Dr. Tiosano. She added, "The surgery is done using a small, thin and delicate stent made of gelatin that is the width of a hair. The XEN is implanted in the subconjunctival space, creating an alternative route to drain fluid from the eye, making it possible to reduce intraocular pressure."

"Glaucoma is a chronic disease that damages the optic nerve, making it the second most common cause of blindness around the world," said Dr. Tiosano. "Glaucoma patients require treatment for the rest of their lives. Without treatment, the disease will result in a slow loss of vision and even blindness. In most cases of glaucoma, there is an increase in interocular pressure due to damage to the mechanism that facilitates draining of fluids produced by the eye."
Local treatment with eye drops is generally the first line of treatment suggested, however, sometimes, there is no option but to perform surgery to drain the fluid. Therefore, there are patients who will need more than one surgery over the course of their lives. There are various surgical methods for this purpose, and the new method offers numerous advantages: relative to most of the surgeries available to glaucoma patients, the surgery is significantly less invasive as the white of the eye is not involved in the procedure and scarring in the surgical and drainage area is avoided. Furthermore, the surgery results in immediate reduction of interocular pressure, and recovery is on the same day.
Dr. Tiosano summarized, "In addition to the effectiveness of the procedure in reducing interocular pressure, the new implant provides a long-term benefit as it preserves the eye tissue in the event additional surgery is required in the future. The surgery itself requires special expertise. It is considered safe, posing minimal risk and recovery is quick."
