New Service for Oncology Patients: Acupuncture to Help Relieve Disease Symptoms

Hillel Yaffe’s Oncology Institute now offers acupuncture alongside conventional care to help relieve pain, side effects and anxiety as part of a holistic body-mind approach

The Oncology and Hematology-Oncology Institute at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center has recently begun offering a new service: acupuncture provided in parallel with conventional oncology care. Acupuncture is a well-known complementary medicine method based on the insertion of thin, fine needles into specific points on the body. These treatments are performed in collaboration with and upon recommendation of the medical staff, and focus on relieving common symptoms associated with the disease and treatments, such as pain, nausea, fatigue, sleep disturbances, hot flashes, stress and anxiety.

Dr. Valeriya Semenisty, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center’s Oncology Institute Director, said, "Acupuncture for oncology patients has recently been added to the national health basket, meaning every patient is entitled to this service. Oncology care is not limited to administering a drug/treatment for the disease but is a multidisciplinary approach that brings together care teams from various sectors, from medicine and nursing to social work, physical therapy and more. The introduction of acupuncture to the Oncology and Hematology-Oncology Institute is another important and vital aspect in improving our patients' quality of life, grounded in a holistic approach that sees each patient as a whole person - body and mind."

Danit Katz-Stern, Director of the Integrative and Complementary Medicine Service, added, "We are not here to replace oncology treatment, but are here to complement it. Research shows that these treatments contribute to improved quality of life, physical functioning, and psychological well-being in patients and help reduce treatment side effects. Treatment is provided by certified practitioners with experience working with oncology patients, in full collaboration with the medical staff, and is tailored to each individual patient's medical condition. The goal of this service is to offer patients additional, safe and professional support — helping them navigate the challenges of this period and strengthening their sense of well-being and control over the process."
