One of the main and most essential hubs of activity at the heart of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center is the Operating Room Department. It is one of the most complex departments at the hospital, as it requires sensitive, intensive and critical inter-departmental interaction in virtually every respect – from medical, nursing and administrative to service and financial.
The nature of the Operating Room Department is fundamentally different from other departments. Its permanent staff is primarily composed of a nursing team and various support staff (orderlies, janitors and others). Depending on the week's scheduled surgeries, they are joined by staff from the Anesthesiology Department (which is permanently housed in the operating room facility) as well as staff from the various surgical departments.
The Operating Room Department works closely with the recovery unit, which is located near the operating rooms and serves as an interim station for patients before they are transferred to the regular departments.
Patient Admissions and Operating Room Operating Procedures
Every patient scheduled for surgery arrives at the Operating Room Complex to be prepared. The nursing staff provides patients and the people accompanying them with information about the surgery as well as helps with routine pre-op preparations, such as preparation of the operating room itself. At the same time, the patient is connected to various monitors while an anesthesiologist is called in to anesthetize the patient.
Interaction with the Anesthesiology Department is an integral part of the operating room team's activities. The Operating Room Complex is the focal point of the activity of both departments. Basically, the only time staff members leave the complex is to go home or go to the hospital cafeteria.
Like the other in-patient departments, the nursing staff, which is teamed based on the rooms scheduled for that day, provides assistance in pre-op preparations, anesthesia, the surgery itself and creating the mandatory surgery list, as well as in the transition to the recovery room.
