Description

The ENT – Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Unit at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center treats diseases and disorders of the nose and sinuses, mouth and pharynx, throat, ears and head-neck area. The unit is part of the national center for treatment of OPMD (oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy ), working in conjunction with Prof. Sergio Bluman of the HYMC Neurology Department. The unit specializes in treatment of sinonasal diseases, including treatment of sleep apnea, head-neck tumors and pediatric ENT diseases. Emergency and elective ENT services are provided to both children and adults.

Unit services include:

  • Sinonasal surgery o Pediatric ENT care o Treatment of hoarseness and voice disorders
  • Thyroid and parathyroid surgeries
  • Snoring and Sleep Apnea Clinic
  • Hearing and Speech Service

The unit is affiliated with the Technion's Faculty of Medicine.

The Nose and Sinus Service

The unit is experienced in endoscopic surgery (a minimally invasive surgical technique) of the nose and sinuses (FESS), in which the natural sinus drainages are expanded to facilitate normal, optimal sinus function.

Unit doctors also treat acute and chronic sinusitis, polyps, allergies and sinus headaches by surgically repairing the nasal deformity and treating both benign and malignant tumors in the nose and sinuses. All of the surgeries in the unit are performed using the most advanced technology available.

The Pediatric ENT Service

If your child suffers from chronic ear infections, fluid in the ear, snoring, sleep apnea, chronic runny nose or repeated tonsillitis – we may be able to resolve these problems to your complete satisfaction.

We use sophisticated (fiber optics) devices to diagnose and treat acute and chronic ear infections, fluid in the ear and upper airway obstructions that manifest as snoring. We also surgically insert ventilation tubes for ear infections, perform adenoidectomies, tonsillectomies and a wide range of ear surgeries in addition to providing services for respiratory problems originating in the larynx or trachea as well as congenital cysts in the necks of children.

The Voice and Throat Service

We work together with the Speech and Hearing Service to evaluate hoarseness and voice. In addition, we perform microlaryngoscopy surgery to treat problems with the vocal cords, surgery to remove malignant tumors in the throat, and speech restoration in patients who have undergone laryngectomies. In the case of total laryngectomies, the surgeon creates a surgical fistula (duct) between the trachea and esophagus in which he inserts a voice prosthesis.

Head and neck and thyroid surgery

The unit operates a thyroid clinic which deals with diagnosis and treatment of nodules of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The treatment includes surgery when required, as well as use of innovative and advanced technologies.

Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea

The clinic assesses patients complaining of snoring. As part of the assessment and prior to surgery, sleep endoscopy is performed. The various treatments offered include coblation, targeting the affected areas in the nasal and pharyngeal cavities, and, when necessary, adopting conservative treatments whenever they are found to be more suitable.

The Hearing and Speech Institute

The Hearing and Speech Institute treats patients suffering from enunciation disorders, speech delays, speech disorders following cerebral events, etc. We conduct hearing tests on children and adults, using the BERA (functional recording of ascending brain stem auditory pathways) tests to examine the auditory nerve. In addition, the institute treats swallowing disorders and speech prostheses in patients who have undergone laryngectomies.

Swallowing Clinic

In this clinic patients meet with physicians, speech therapists and dieticians, who all use advanced medical equipment.

The Service soon hopes to add a device to test cochlear echos known as the OAE – Otoacoustic Emissions.
