The Blood Bank at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center operates 24 hours a day.

The main purpose of the Blood Bank is to provide blood and blood products to patients at the medical center.

The source of the blood and blood products at the central blood bank of the blood services - MDA Ramle and the MDA Haifa Blood Bank. Blood donations are not taken at the medical center.

Autologous donations - patients scheduled for certain elective procedures who want to and are able to donate blood to themselves in the waiting period before surgery should contact the local Blood Bank along with a written referral from the sending physician to schedule a donation date. The last date for an autologous donation is 72 hours before surgery. The use of autologous blood is solely for infusion to the actual donor.

Taking samples and administering blood transfusion - are done by medical staff that has been certified to do so (two staff members for each procedure). All medical center employees involved in any way have undergone online training on the Blood Bank's procedures.

The Blood Bank is connected to the medical center's pneumatic system, and it is used to send blood units and products directly to the Emergency Room, operating rooms and all medical center departments.

Transfusion history - test results and details of the transfusions administered are documented in the Blood Bank system. Current and past results are compared for every sample received.

Controls - the Blood Bank performs internal and external quality controls as well as international external quality control.

Tests

The Blood Bank performs the following tests: 

• Blood type and RhD 
• Red cell antigen phenotype (for blood units and patient) 
• Direct Coombs tests 
• Antibody assay (Allo, autologous and cold) 
• Identification of specific antibodies for blood groups (panels) 
• To quantitatively determine antibody levels (titration) 
• Identification of antibodies from red blood cells (through elution) 
• Specific adsorptions of autologous antibodies 
• Crossmatch testing 
• Investigation of blood transfusion reactions

The Blood Bank dispenses the following products to the medical center's departments and units: 

• Packed red blood cells (PC) 
• Leukodepleted packed red blood cells (filtered or with a filter) 
• Washed packed red blood cells 
• Irradiated packed red blood cells 
• Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) 
• Cryoprecipitate 
• Thrombocytes
